1. Project Overview
Every year, thousands of tonnes of denim garments, military and defence uniforms, industrial workwear, institutional clothing, and other textile materials are discarded after reaching the end of their primary use. Much of this valuable fabric ultimately ends up in landfills, contributing to environmental pollution, increasing textile waste, and placing additional pressure on natural resources. At the same time, many women and economically disadvantaged communities continue to face limited opportunities for stable employment and sustainable livelihoods.
Mission Jeevan Dhaga is a flagship initiative of JAP TAP SEWA Healthcare Foundation dedicated to establishing a Circular Textile Recycling & Livelihood Centre that transforms discarded textiles into valuable, functional, and marketable products while creating dignified employment opportunities for women and underserved communities.
The Centre will collect, sort, sanitize, recycle, redesign, and upcycle pre-used denim, military uniforms, defence uniforms, industrial workwear, institutional textiles, and other reusable fabrics into innovative products with commercial and social value. The project will combine vocational skill development, eco-friendly manufacturing, design innovation, entrepreneurship, and market linkages to create a sustainable circular economy model.
Mission Jeevan Dhaga aims to demonstrate that responsible waste management can become a powerful tool for environmental conservation, employment generation, women’s empowerment, and community development while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
2. Why This Project? (Need Assessment)
The textile industry is among the largest contributors to global waste and environmental pollution. Large volumes of denim, uniforms, institutional clothing, and industrial textiles are discarded every year despite retaining significant material value. Most of these textiles are either burned or sent to landfills, resulting in unnecessary environmental degradation and loss of reusable resources.
Simultaneously, women, particularly from economically weaker backgrounds, often lack access to skill-based employment opportunities that provide stable incomes and long-term financial independence. There is a growing need for livelihood models that combine environmental sustainability with inclusive economic development.
Mission Jeevan Dhaga addresses these challenges by converting textile waste into opportunities. Through organized collection, scientific recycling, creative upcycling, product manufacturing, and entrepreneurship development, the project creates employment while reducing waste, conserving resources, and promoting responsible consumption.
